Steroid Hormones and Food Safety
Since the 1950s, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a number of steroid hormone drugs for use in beef cattle and sheep, including natural estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and their synthetic versions. (FDA) These drugs increase the animals’ growth rate and the efficiency by which they convert the feed they eat into meat. (FDA) The principle of using steroids is very controversial due in part to people wanting to know what is in their food however with the growing population of the United States and also other countries around the world, it could be said that it is a necessity to use hormones to provide enough meat to the population.
The FDA approves these drugs only after information and/or studies have shown that the food from the treated animals is safe for people to eat, and that the drugs do not harm the treated animal or the environment. (FDA) The drugs also have to be effective, meaning that they work as intended. (FDA) The labeling for each product provides all instructions for safe and effective use and is approved by FDA. (FDA) For each approved product, the FDA also makes available to the public via its website a Freedom of Information Summary that summarizes the information that FDA used to determine that the drug is safe for the treated animals, the animal products (edible tissues such as meat) are safe for humans to eat, and that the product is effective. (FDA)
Some of the approved drugs are naturally produced throughout life in people and animals, such as estradiol (estrogen), progesterone, and testosterone. (FDA)These natural hormones are necessary for normal development, growth, and reproduction. (FDA) People are not at risk from eating food from animals treated with these drugs because the amount of additional hormone following drug treatment is very small compared with the amount of natural hormones that are normally found in the meat of untreated animals and that are naturally produced in the human body. (FDA)
Some of the approved drugs are synthetic versions of the natural hormones, such as trenbolone acetate and zeranol. (FDA) Just like the natural hormone implants, before FDA approved these drugs, FDA required information and/or toxicological testing in laboratory animals to determine safe levels in the animal products that we eat (edible tissues). (FDA) Furthermore, FDA required that the manufacturers demonstrate that the amount of hormone left in each edible tissue after treatment is below the appropriate safe level. (FDA) As described above, a safe level is a level which would be expected to have no harmful effect in humans. (FDA)
With everything there is the good, bad and ugly. In order to make the right decision for yourself you need to do research about what is in your food and what you are willing to risk. Every source of meat is regulated by the Department of Agriculture and also regulated by the FDA.

I am happy that someone is covering this topic because I know that I am not the only one who tries to watch what kind of food they eat, and what is fed to the animals we are eating. I am excited to see what else you post about this topic.
ReplyDeleteHormone drugs have to be the most interesting thing for animals. Steroids being apart of that animal and their growth rate is kind of important because since they take them, it make them bigger which gives you more meat to be sold but i also agree that its important that the meat be checked before sold just for contaminatoin reason.
ReplyDeleteI love reading things like this because so many things are unknown with what goes into our food. I watched the documentary FoodInc and this post reminds me of it. The documentary was so disturbing. The things that are injected into the animals now are so unhealthy for them and us.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Lucus. People are not informed on the food they intake and many others just don't care even though they know it is not the healthy route to go. I liked the fact that you discussed that people need to know the risks they are taking when eating the foods that they eat whether they be added supplements or natural hormones.
ReplyDeleteThank you for all of this information. I have never been one to really think about the steroids and chemicals that are put into the food I consume. For some reason I just seem to forget about it but this has really made me think. And I know I will now start to do this and figure out which ones are and are not acceptable. Great job.
ReplyDeleteIt's hard for me to think whats in my food while I'm eating it. I also do not want to think about harmful chemicals that I might be consuming. This post reminded me that they're many meat companies that aren't concerned with their customers, but how much they can make from them. It's also nice that not all meat companies use synthetic versions of other drugs in order to sell more.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your post. It was filled with a lot of information that I never knew before reading. I never really thought about how many harmful chemicals could be in the food that we consume everyday and what is fed to our animals that we are eating. Im excited to see what else you post about this topic. Good Job!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed your post. it is filled with a lot of information on what exactly they are doing with meat and who is approving the whole process. I liked at the end how you told everyone to make a decision and how its something that everyone should research themselves before they make a decision.
ReplyDeleteAs college students who are eating on a budget we tend to overlook the unhealthy aspects of food. We buy what is cheap not caring what it can do to our bodies. This blog post was really informative. I will definitely think more about buying meat that has not been fed any steroids or other chemicals.
ReplyDeleteI had no idea so many steroids are added to the foods we eat. This was a very informative post which helped shed light on areas of grocery shopping we should be more cognizant of. thank you for the information!
ReplyDeleteIt is crazy what humans have figured out to make the most of the animals. While these are approved and regulated by the FDA, it might not be the best for the body. I did not know a lot of this information to this, so this was a good read. We could do so much better for our bodies, but we chose not to. This information will really make me think twice while grocery shopping.
